ALGIRDAS MYKOLAS BRAZAUSKAS
Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas was born in Rokiskis
on September 22, 1932. His ancestors were peasants. It was his grandfather
Kazimieras who put an end to the dynasty of peasants - he, after acquiring the
speciality of a telegraphist, worked at a railway station.
The father of the would-be President, also
Kazimieras (b. 1906), having finished real secondary school served as an
employee at different institutions; his mother Soflja graduated from Vilnius
University in law and worked as a notary, a barris ter and a judge. Died in
1979.
A. Brazauskas spent his childhood and youth in
Kaisiadorys, where his parents came to live already before the war, since his
Mother was from this locality. Thus Kaisiadorys became his second native
place.
In 1956 A. Brazauskas graduated from the Kaunas
Polytechnic Institute obtaining the speciality of an engineer in
hydrotechnology. In 1977 he defended his thesis for a Candidate's of Science
(Economy) degree. After graduating from the Institute he received an assignment
to build the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant. A capable and active engineer in
a couple of years was appointed the Chief of the Construction Board of the
Energetics Construction Trust, later the Director of Construction at the Kaunas
Reinforced Concrete Construction Plant, in 1962 - Head of the Board at the
Minister of the Building Materials Industry, in 1965 - the Ministry of the
Building Materials Industry, in 1967 - First Deputy Chair man of the State
Planning Committee, in 1977 - LCP CC Secretary on Production. In November of
1988, with the Sajudis support, he was elected the First Secretary of LCP CC, at
the end of 1989, the First Secretary of the independent LCP CC; was elected the
USSR People's Deputy, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the
Republic. After the declaration of the Act of the Reestablishment of Lithuania's
Independence A. Brazauskas was appoined Vice Chairman of the first government.
On October 25, 1992, the elections to the Seimas of the Republic were won by the
LDLP. Its leader A. Brazauskas was elected Chair man of the Seimas and the
acting President of the Republic. On February 14, 1993, Algirdas Mykolas
Brazauskas was elected President of the Republic of
Lithuania.
2001 Elected Chairman of the Social Democratic Party
By Presidential Decree of 4 July 2001 appointed Prime Minister. Started his office on 12 July 2001
